NW Kids October 2008 Issue
Jen Peters and Ginger Highland, co-authors of the hilarious new book Mother of the Year: The Adventures and Misadventures of Parenthood, sat down with NW Kids to tell our readers what inspired them to share their adventures and misadventures of parenthood with the world. The book, which would be a perfect baby shower gift, is based both on their own personal experiences as moms, as well as some embarrassing moments culled from their friends and family. This is what the two local writers had to say about their journey as first-time authors.
What was your ultimate motivation for writing this book?
To add a little humor and lighthearted fun to our crazy lives as parents. One of the best gifts we can give one another is sharing life experiences. We wanted moms and dads to realize that they are not alone on this journey and that instead of stressing out and saving for a family therapy fund, they can laugh at the many comical and sometimes humiliating situations we run into.
Where did you get all of these hysterical stories?
We would get together with our girlfriends and always ended up talking about the embarrassing things our kids would say or share some fiasco we had to endure. We would raise a glass and end each story with “I am the Mother of the Year!” Everyone left feeling better and realized that they weren’t alone on this journey. We thought if it helped us, it could do the same for so many other parents. We started hosting “Mother of the Year” parties where friends would come and share some of their stories, and the idea for the book was spawned from these gatherings.
My personal favorite was “Play Dates.” What is your favorite anecdote?
Our favorite stories are ones about the funny things that kids say. They are so honest, frank and matter-of-fact. The best example of this in the book is probably the story “Vitamins.”
(see excerpt below)
How has the book been received?
The response has been fantastic! It seems to have such broach appeal. Almost anyone, whether they are a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle can identify and has a story of their own to tell. One buyer of a major retail chain shared with us that it brought her right back to her child rearing days.
Where can our readers buy your book?
They can currently buy the book online at amazon.com and www.motheroftheyear.net as well as Annie Bloom’s Bookstore in Portland, Dragonfly in West Linn, Meringue Boutique in Lake Oswego, Spoiled Rotten boutique in West Linn, Angel Kisses in Bend and Wallace Books in Portland. Stay tuned for more locations!
Will there be more books of this sort by you two?
Absolutely. We are working on our next Mother of the Year adventure, Father of the Year, Grandparents of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and a holiday version featuring the crazy and wacky things that we do for our children.

Vitamins Excerpt
Saturday morning my grandson and I were having breakfast together. He was taking all his gummy vitamins. I asked him, “What do you need those for?” He told me very matter-of-factly that they helped him grow big and strong. Later on, I was taking some of my medications and he asked me, “Papa, what do you need those for?” I told him they helped keep me young. He thought about it for a minute and said, “Well, they’re not working.”
